small ways to find joy in the everyday

12 Small Pleasures to Elevate Your Everyday…

We understand that this lockdown is important to keep the most vulnerable members of our community safe, but we really miss normal life! We miss the buzz of the salon, the cheery smiles and the light-hearted banter as we bring you a steaming hot coffee. We miss the enormous grins as clients skip out the door after being made to feel fabulous. We miss our friends, we miss our colleagues, we just miss LIFE.  Spring is just around the corner and lets hope it brings with it the promise of fresh hope, sunshine and freedom.

Sometimes in these troubled times it’s easy to lose sight of the small pleasures in life so we thought we’d share with you some ideas of how to elevate your everyday. Finding joy in the little moments can provide a much-needed boost in times of uncertainty.  And it’s got to be better than reading the news at the moment!

How to Find Joy in the Everyday…

1. Luxuriate

Whether you’re pushing the vacuum around after the kids or stripping the bed sheets, why not inject a little joy at the same time? Do it wearing a hair/face mask and you’ll feel awesome afterwards.  We recommend Olaplex for silky soft strong hair you’ll want to show off.

2. Dance

Stick on your favourite music, turn it right up and really let loose in your kitchen. No-one is watching so just go for it! You never know, a dance might be just what the doctor ordered and make you smile from ear-to-ear. We love dancing around in the salon staff room when no-one is watching… shhh don’t tell anyone.

3. Send Flowers

Sending flowers to someone else always makes you feel a warm glow inside, but don’t forget how awesome it is to receive them too. Send flowers to yourself and enjoy the display of colour and heady scent every time you walk past them. Pure joy.

4. Bake

The smell of fresh bread baking in the oven is thought to have mood-lifting properties. Whether you’re Mary Berry or not, baking a cake or some buns is a sure fire way to make you feel like you’ve achieved a little joy in your day. And you get to scoff them afterwards too…

5. Be You

If you feel like wearing a slick of red lipstick, your best dress and spending ages doing your hair ‘just’ to knock about the house in, DO IT. Nothing makes you feel better than getting all dolled up and feeling like the old you. Similarly, if you only feel comfortable in your slouchiest loungewear then you have more than an excuse to remain that way just as long as you please!

6. Be Kind to Yourself

Giving yourself a break and letting go of the things which cause you upset is harder than it sounds. Pick your battles and let go of all the little things which can wait. This especially extends to those of you with kids at home…everyone is feeling the strain right so give yourself a break and don’t beat yourself up – you are doing AMAZINGLY.

7. Find Time for You

Be sure to give yourself that much-needed ‘me’ time, even if it means just taking a quick walk around the block whilst dinner is cooking -there is much joy to be found in getting some headspace. If you can have a blissful long soak in the bath with no kids around then better still…absolute heaven.

8. Do a Blow Dry

After indulging in a hair mask, give yourself a really beautiful blow-dry and take your time doing it. Whether you prefer tousled, curled, sleek or straight, taking the time to really look after your hair will make you feel incredible (and your hair will thank you for it too).

9. Drink Water

Make sure you are drinking at least 2 litres of water every day. Why not inject some extra joy into your daily hydration with a slice or two of lemon or cucumber? If you are properly hydrated your hair and skin will look radiant and you’ll feel so much better for it.

10. Glow

Turn the lights off when you have your nightly bath/shower and light some candles instead. Close your eyes and make some positive affirmations about the day ahead, breathing deeply and setting your sights on happiness. This lockdown is only temporary and there is a glimmer of hope as Spring comes around. We can almost feel the warm glow of sun on our skin and feel the click of the lock as we throw open the doors to the salon again…. Please let’s hope it’s not too far away!!

11. Cuddle Your Fur Babies

Digby sure is missing you all, and we can’t think of a better way to feel joy than by cuddling your fur babies! Whether cat, dog, hamster or rabbit, stroking an animal is a sure-fire way to boost endorphins and feel the love.

12. Enjoy Nature

Getting outdoors and enjoying the beauty of nature is a proven way to boost mood and make you feel great. Even if its raining, the feel of just being outside can invigorate you and make you feel whole again. Spend a few minutes in the garden each day as you drink your morning coffee, just breathing and listening to the sounds all around you- it can work wonders and energise you for the rest of the day.

We hope that these fun ideas of how to inject some small joys into your everyday lives are useful. They are just a bit of fun to remind you that we are thinking of you all, and can’t wait to open the doors to the salon once more! Please stay tuned on our social media channels to hear news of reopening, we’ll let you know just as soon as we hear more from the powers-that-be.

Until then, stay fabulous and let us know of any small daily joys you think we’ve missed!

For appointments just get in touch or use the ‘book now‘ button our website. We can’t wait to welcome you all back (hopefully soon!).

Grey Hair is Having its Moment – and People (of All Ages) are Loving It!

Celebrities like Kylie Jenner and Kelly Osbourne have dyed their hair grey in the past but recently, more and more people are hopping on the grey hair dye train. “Mushroom blonde” (a glossy greige shade) has skyrocketed on Pinterest, with the search site noticing a 308% spike in users looking for the shade (the biggest of any other hair shade this year).

What started as a popular hair colour on Pinterest grew to be one of the most sought-after beauty trends on Instagram and the grey hair trend is now stronger than ever, with over 10,000 people in the UK alone searching for ‘grey hair dye’ each month!

Cool grey looks like it’s going to be the colour of the summer and people are either embracing their natural greying hair or choosing grey hair dye to stay ahead of the trend pack. So sleek, so shiny, so sexy – and we have to say, we love it!

Owning Those Natural Silvery Strands

Many people are shy of showing off their first grey hairs and attempt to cover them up with permanent dyes. Whether salt & pepper-y, silvery or ashen, your natural shade of grey may be both chic and flattering so why not try to let yourself go au naturale? Even aside from it being the hottest hair colour of the season, showing off your silver locks with pride and magnificence can be incredibly empowering!

Caring for Grey Hair

If embracing your natural grey hair then it’s important to remember that grey hair can seem coarser because when you have grey hair the oil glands in the scalp produce less sebum, which will result in drier and tougher, textured hair.  With age, hair loses density, shine and pigment—and is thus more fragile and sensitive to the sun’s rays – so it’s crucial that you properly care for and protect your grey hair to ensure that it stays glossy and strong.
White and grey hair is also more likely to oxidise, which sometimes leads to a yellowing effect which can make it look tarnished.

Because of these traits of naturally grey hair, it’s necessary to add moisture to your hair care routine through a deep conditioner, a shampoo, or your styling products. Here at David & David we use Keune Silver Saviour shampoo which cancels out any yellow tones keeping your greys on the cool/white side. The powerful purple pigments tone and cool, provitamin B5 softens and plumps, and wheat proteins strengthen and thicken to make sure that your natural grey hair stays silvery and shines bright. This grey shampoo and conditioner range by Keune also works great after a lightening/blonde hair dye treatment to keep your colour looking bright.

Rocking the Dyed Grey Hair Trend

Grey hair isn’t always earned by having a full and active life – lots of fashionistas are choosing to dye their hair grey to make a hot style statement for the summer. The juxtaposition of a young face with ‘old’ hair makes a striking and fun look for men and women alike! Just search the hashtag #grannyhair and you’ll see what we mean…

Unless you have a naturally light-blond hair colour, going grey means bleaching your hair to strip out the colour before dyeing your hair. Bleaching your hair means there’s a potential for some breakage and damage, so we recommend using an Olaplex treatment which nourishes each individual hair strand and permanently rebuilds the damaged disulphide bonds in your hair that are broken during chemical processes. If you’re looking for more fashion-forward effect, why not choose a grey root gloss but leave the ends lighter and brighter- the grey version of the ‘ombre’.

Dyeing your hair grey to embrace the current trend of the season can give you a really fresh update for summer and make you look utterly fabulous. From silver blondes to shimmering greys, metallic hair hues that will convince you to reach for that silver hair dye and embrace your inner Daenerys Targaryen.

Take a look at these grey hairstyles making silvery waves this summer and let us know your favourites. Will you be inspired to go grey this season!?

Keune shades are enriched with certified organic argan oil, making the formulas extremely gentle and even nourishing. Argan oil is rich in vitamin A and E, which protect the hair from external influences. The coconut base protects the scalp from staining while added phytokeratin, a plant-derived ingredient with natural keratin.

Better for you, better for the planet. Naturally…

Naturally Cruelty-Free Boucleme

A fairly recent addition to our arsenal of cruelty-free professional hair care products is the Boucleme range of shampoos, conditioners and styling creams. The entire Boucleme range contains 0% sulphates, silicones, mineral oils, petroleum, propylene glycol, PEGs, parabens, and artificial fragrances and colours. It’s as natural as it comes.

Boucleme is specially formulated for curly hair and is an extremely popular range for our numerous clients who follow the curly girl method as they are paraben and sulphate free. Curly hair is drier and more fragile than other hair types, it requires nourishing and penetrating ingredients to help hydrate and strengthen the cuticle from the inside out. Boucleme restores moisture and gives nutrition to lacklustre hair, reviving it from the inside out (naturally).

Boucleme not only makes incredibly effective natural chemical-free hair products, but the UK company cares passionately about the planet and about sustainability. They ensure that they only use ingredients which come from UK farmers who are paid fairly. All the packaging is recyclable and the ingredients are biodegradable, meaning that Boucleme is as safe for the environment as it is for your body. Boucleme test their natural products on real curls, never on animals, and work with a panel of testers with different curl issues to get the amazing results for which they are renowned.

We adore Boucleme and so do our clients; we are always needing to order more to keep up with demand! For every 300ml bottle you buy, Boucleme plant a tree so why not give it a try next time you’re in Plymouth’s favourite cruelty-free salon?

The Secret is Out! What is Olaplex and Why Do You Need it in Your Life?

WHAT CAN OLAPLEX DO FOR YOU?

If you haven’t heard of Olaplex treatments, pull up a chair and listen very carefully because this is a hair industry secret you (and your hair) can’t afford to miss. Olaplex is a miracle. OK perhaps it’s not quite the ‘turning water into wine’ scale of miracle, but it certainly comes very close! Those who have used it will know its revolutionary powers and how it can bring back to life even the most lifeless of hair. Olaplex is a treatment loved by professional hero salons and beauty fans the world over – we’ve been using it for a while here at David and David, but for those who haven’t experienced the wondrous results yet, read on…

What is Olaplex?

Olaplex is a hair care treatment system which actually re-builds broken bonds in the hair, returning your hair to the lustrous, full and healthy hair you were born with. When using Olaplex, all thermal, mechanical and chemical damage is reversed and broken ends are fixed. Olaplex works on a molecular level to ensure that your hair is ‘fixed’ from the inside which makes it look (and feel) incredible. Olaplex is formulated with a patented bond-building chemistry to strengthen hair, hydrate, boost shine and reduce frizz. It is free from sulphates, parabens, gluten and is also vegan-friendly. The good news for our lovely curly clients is that Olaplex is also curly girl method-friendly! This ground-breaking technology can be applied while colouring right at the foil stage to allow the achievement of lighter blondes without breakage. It protects the hair bonds and so removes the risk of damaging the hair which colourists previously feared with dramatic chemical colour changes!

How Does Olaplex Work?

If you have had lots of chemical treatments over the years or haven’t looked after your hair quite as well as you could have, the result could be frizzy, difficult to manage and dry hair. Olaplex works differently than other conditioning treatments… in fact it doesn’t even use the over-used phrase ‘conditioning treatment’. All too often ‘conditioning treatments’ merely coat the hair strands with a silicone coating which is like putting a fake plastic seal on the hair. It doesn’t actually mend or fix the problem. Olaplex nourishes each individual hair strand and permanently rebuilds the damaged disulphide bonds in your hair that are broken during chemical processes. It’s like ‘resetting’ your hair after years of damage – giving your hair a new lease of life and rebuilding the strength, structure and integrity of your hair. It’s an absolute god send for clients wanting a radical colour change. Do you want black to platinum in one session? With Olaplex- no problem!how does olaplex work

THE Five Stages of Olaplex

The first two steps of the Olaplex treatment system must happen in an Olaplex-approved salon. David & David is one of only 3 hair salons in Plymouth who are qualified to use this revolutionary hair treatment system, and we are fully-trained to professionally deliver the Olaplex technology to lovely clients looking to improve their hair health. Here are the five stages of Olaplex in a nutshell…

1) Olaplex Number 1:

The first stage is the Olaplex bond multiplier which can be used as a stand-alone treatment or mixed with colour and put straight onto your hair in the foils. This concentrated first salon step rebuilds broken disulfide bonds and begins the process of preventing damage and repairing hair.

2) Olaplex Number 2:

After number 1, the bond perfector is then put on after the colour is rinsed out. Number 2 is left on for 10-15 minutes to really allow it the time to work its magic and fix all of those broken bonds resulting in the strongest, shiniest, and healthiest hair possible.

3) Olaplex Number 3:

The third stage is done at home- the hair perfector is a take-home treatment which is recommended to use once a week. Number 3 is best applied prior to your shampoo and conditioner and left on for 10 minutes at the very least (but up to 30 minutes if you can!). The longer you can leave it the better (Kim Kardashian swears by sleeping in hers overnight).

4) Olaplex Number 4:

The Olaplex bond maintenance shampoo can replace your regular shampoo and will help to hydrate, strengthen and topping up your hair care at every wash. Designed for all hair types, Olaplex shampoo is formulated without sulfates and parabens and is colour safe. Thanks to the coconut-oil derived surfactant in the shampoo, it’s super bubbly and a little goes a long way.

5) Olaplex Number 5:

There is also a bond maintenance conditioner which is the final step in your Olaplex hair care treatment. It can be left on for up to three minutes before rinsing and enjoying the hydrated smooth hair you’ve always dreamed of.
